Pipe Repair products offer a fast, safe way to seal splits, holes, and corroded sections instantly – often under full system pressure – avoiding the need for expensive and time-consuming network shutdowns.
Mining operations rely on extensive pipeline networks to transport water, slurry, tailings and chemicals across large, often remote sites. These systems are critical to production, connecting extraction, processing and storage facilities. From dewatering and ore transport to tailings management, pipelines must operate continuously in harsh environments where failure can directly impact output and safety.
Key Mining Challenges
Maintaining System Integrity
These conditions place significant demands on pipeline performance. Abrasive slurries cause internal wear, while aggressive chemistry and variable pH drive accelerated corrosion. High pressures, flow fluctuations and long distances further increase system stress, elevating the risk of leakage, failure and costly downtime.
As a result, pipe fittings play a critical role in maintaining system integrity – ensuring secure connections, accommodating movement and enabling efficient maintenance. Poorly specified fittings can lead directly to operational failure, whereas well-engineered solutions improve reliability, protect assets and support long-term performance.
Viking Johnson Mining Solutions
Mechanical Fittings are Critical
Viking Johnson provides a proven range of mechanical pipe fittings designed to meet these challenges.
Available as standard or bespoke solutions, the range supports new installation, as well as ongoing repair and maintenance programmes.
With sizes from DN350 to DN2000, these fittings offer fast, simple installation, long service life and a cost-effective solution for complex pipeline systems.
Their design enables ease of servicing and adaptability to real-world site conditions, helping to reduce downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
Viking Johnson’s PE Pipe Solutions are ideal for connecting PE pipe used in both permanent and temporary dewatering applications as well as in trunk mains bringing water to mines in remote dry areas.
Projects
Supporting Mining Operations at Altitude
This capability is demonstrated at Codelco’s Andina Mine in Chile, one of the world’s largest copper mining operations located 4,000 metres above sea level in the Andes.
As part of a major expansion project to increase production capacity, Viking Johnson supplied 116 large diameter dedicated couplings to support the pipeline network delivering essential water to the site. Operating in a high-altitude, high-demand environment, the pipeline infrastructure required robust, reliable connections capable of withstanding continuous pressure and challenging conditions.
The use of Large Diameter mechanical couplings provided secure, leak-tight joints while supporting efficient installation and long-term performance across a critical system.

Large Diameter Stepped Coupling – Mining – Chile
Viking Johnson 30″ Large Diameter Dedicated Stepped Couplings joined the water-feed pipe network expanding Codelco’s Andina copper mine in the Chilean Andes.
Large Diameter and AquaFast, part of the PE Pipe Solutions range offer solutions to the technical challenges faced by consultants’ engineers, contractors and owners working in the mining sector.
